Birmingham Stage Race

September  22nd, 23rd & 24th
2017 Birmingham Mountain Stage Race       3 Mountains - 3 Days - 56 Miles
In 2107, the Birmingham Stage Race is again joining with the Grand Viduta Stage Race in Huntsville, AL, the Chattanooga Mountains Stage Race in Chattanooga, TN and the Cumberland Plateau Stage Race, Jamestown, TN, to form a Stage Race Series. We will have awards for overall series winners and special awards for runners that complete all 4 races.

The Mountain High Outfitters - Birmingham Stage race will be held on three unique mountains, in three parks, in Birmingham, Alabama. The first stage will be Friday, September 23rd on Ruffner Mountain at Ruffner Mtn Nature Preserve. The second stage will be Saturday, Sept 24th on Red Mountain at Red Mountain Park. The final stage will be Sept 25th on Double Oak Mountain at Oak Mountain State Park. The three mountains are within 15 miles of the Thursday afternoon Package Pickup on Highway 280 at Mountain High Outfitters located in Cahaba Village, next to Whole Foods. (2800 Cahaba Village Plaza Suite 250, Birmingham, AL 35243.) All races will start at 8:00 AM. Yes, it will likely be pretty hot, but you are Trail Runners.

The Race will be 56 grueling and demanding miles. Stage one and stage 3 are primarily on single track trails and some of these trails are tough. Although none of the mountains are over 600 feet above the surrounding terrain, some of the trials are very technical and steep. Some of the trails used in the Oak Mountain stage had never been used in a race. Those running Blood Rock might see a couple of the trails again. (That's a hint!)

Runners may also enter the 2 Day, 2 Mountain Race which includes the Saturday and Sunday Race. Single day entry is available on the printable registration form only. You are welcome to run any single day you wish. You will use the same BIB all 3 days. (If you loose your bib, we will write your number on your forehead with a permanent marker.) We will have registration available each morning starting one hour before the start. (Late registration fees increase $10.00)

Hotels: There are two options for hotels for the Birmingham Stage Race. Chooses a centrally located location or stay near Oak Mtn State Park. Centrally located hotels are all between 12 and 15 miles from the start of each race. The map link shows several hotels at the intersection of Interstate 459 and Hwy 280. The 5 hotels on the west side of Hwy 280 will be the easiest to get out of to go the the starts. There are also several very good restaurants in the Colonnade Shopping Center within walking distance. If you prefer to stay close to the start of the Final day, choose one of the hotels on Hwy 119, Cahaba Valley Rd. They are all less than 3 miles from the entrance to Oak Mountain State Park and there are all kinds of restaurants in the area. There is, of course, the option of changing hotels every night to be near the start each day. Personally, I would stay at the Hilton or Hampton Inn close to the Colonnade, just of Hwy 280 and I-459, see the map of centrally located hotels. They are both withing a few 100 yards of Edgar's Bakery! (That's a dangerous place for me)

There are also hotels near the north entrance to the park on Hwy 280. These would be fine as well. Be advised, which ever place or places you choose to stay, getting to Ruffner Mountain Friday Morning will be difficult. Both Hwy 280 and I 65 heading into Birmingham have extremely heavy, slow traffic Friday morning. You will need to leave well before 7:00 AM to make the start by 8:00 AM.

CampingOak Mountain State Park has a large, very nice campground and there are cabins available, both within 2 miles of the start.
